One-Way Links Review

June 30th, 2009 by admin

Looking for a OneWayLinks review?  The 1waylinks.net software from Jonathan Leger takes the security of the blog backlink network very seriously.  Jon makes sure that every blog post is manually reviewed for approval before it is published to the network.

Surprisingly, this is done by a human reviewer.  This person is responsible to ensure that only good quality, family-friendly posts will be added to network blogs.   As you might imagine, no adult, gambling, illegal sites, or sites with religious content are allowed into the network. As a result, you never have to worry about your blog linking to sites that you would not approve of.

Another excellent feature is quality checking.  Jon uses an automated process to verify that all of the blogs in the network maintain their links to your site.   If Jon finds cheaters he kicks them out of the network.  Additionally, any blogs banned by Google are removed from the network swiftly as well. This process ensures  quality 1-WayLinks (backlinks) to your site.  Jon is careful to make sure that there are no links or footprints leading back to 1WayLinks.net, either. Each blog is completely independent.

Spend just a few minutes writing and submitting a blog post to the network, and once that’s done the rest is taken care of for you by Jon’s awesome automation system.

The 1waylinks.net service from Jonathan Leger gives you 750 one way backlinks to your site.  It does this by allowing you to add blog posts on 250 blogs in the 1WayLinks network each month.   Each of your posts can contain up to 3 hyperlinks.  As a result, 250 blog posts time 3 links per post mean that you can get a maximum of 750 new one-way links every month.

Of course, these links can be aimed at any urls you want, with whatever keywords you want (subject to the guidelines of the service).  Jon does not allow hate, porn, etc.

As you might expect, you have complete control over how many blogs each post you write will appear on.   For example, if you want to create one blog post and have it appear on 10 blogs, a second post on 75 blogs, and a third post on 15 blogs, you can do that eadily.

Bathroom upgrades can quickly get out of hand

June 30th, 2009 by admin

I bet there are a thousand ways to improve a bathroom, whether you want a small 2 minute project, a weekend gig, or a full month overhaul. Maybe you’re bored, or you’re systematically updating various parts your house and the bathroom just happens to be next. Either way, this is not something to be taken lightly, especially if you want to do the full enchilada. Write it out, make drawings if necessary, price your options at various stores and then dig in when the timing is right.

You want the list? Ok, you could do something tiny like replacing the bathroom shower faucet. Not enough? Maybe you replace the whole glass shower enclosure. Or how about a new toilet with automatic flushing? Or a new bathroom vanity or medicine cabinet? Don’t turn around, you may need new track lighting kits or a shower curtain.

See? You can start small and it will easily blow up into a major overhaul. If this is the only bathroom in your house you have the added complication of keeping it functional as much as possible while you work. It’s not just a demolition zone, you have to keep it safe and usable. If you have secondary bathrooms available then consider yourself lucky, although other members of your house will still be pushing you to finish quickly.

If you’re ready for the major overhaul then talk to a design specialist for ideas, how to plan the demolition and rebuild and how to pick the right appliances and features you’ll need. If you’re handy enough to do it all yourself you’ll save a fortune in outside labor costs. If you can’t, then hire a contractor who knows his stuff and get a firm deadline written out. For your sake and that of your family, don’t let it drag out too long.

What is the Value of Healthy Eating?

June 30th, 2009 by admin

A healthy diet needs to contain vitamins, which are organic compounds that our bodies need for normal growth, and to maintain good health. Minerals, which also come from what we eat, are inorganic substances that are necessary for our bodies to function properly. Healthy eating habits ensure that you get enough of the vitamins and minerals that keep you alive and healthy.

Children, pregnant women and older people especially benefit from a well-balanced diet that provides for all of the needed vitamins, minerals and oils that the body demands.

Water is another very important ingredient to healthy eating. Water is essential to the proper function of our bodies. The typical individual should drink at least eight 8-oz glasses of water each day. Individuals who are overweight, pregnant, breastfeeding, or very active should drink more than eight 8-oz glasses of water each day.

When individuals make a commitment to eating healthier, they reduce the risk of many chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and certain cancers. Eating healthier also means the individual will feel an increase in the amount of energy or stamina that they have for sports, or daily activities.

Healthy eating can also help to reduce your bad cholesterol level and increase your good cholesterol level. This decreases your risk for stroke or heart disease.

When you make a habit of eating healthier you will open your horizons to a host of new foods to choose from such as fresh vegetables, whole grains, and tantalizing fruits. These new foods will make mealtimes interesting again and may even add some fun to your life.

Healthy eating menus may even bring the family around the table more often, so that you can get reacquainted with each other, discover what is happening in each others lives and bond more with kids and teens. Family meal times are great times for reaffirming family values and feeling more like a family, instead of strangers living together.

If you need motivation, think about the following reasons that healthy eating should be a part of your daily life. The right food choices can help you to feel better, lead you to a more positive outlook on life, and can even help you to fight stress. If you are at high risk for high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, or certain cancers your improved healthy eating habit may help you to beat the odds against those diseases.

Is There a Future For Solar Power?

June 30th, 2009 by admin

Introduction

There may be some confusion about the term Solar Power because there are a number of systems that have been established for many years using the sun to heat water, heat ovens to cook food or heat your home either directly or indirectly. But what we are really interested in is the idea of producing electricity from the sun. That electricity can then be used for different requirements not just for heating water or rooms. Technically Solar Power is any system which is powered by the sun to produce useable energy.

Making electricity really isn’t that hard so I am told. The technology is now available to convert the sun’s light into electricity using Photovoltaic cells. One company I know has developed large scale photovoltaic plants in Southern Spain, where of course there is plenty of sunshine. Panels made up of photovoltaic cells can be mounted on the roof or placed anywhere they will capture the sun. They are then connected to the electrical supply in the home and used to run the everyday appliances we depend on.

What Does Photovoltaic Mean?

Photovoltaic literally means light and electricity and the technology has been developed to convert solar energy into usable power. Basically the sun produces white light, which is just a different kind of energy; as I understand it, photovoltaic cells trap this light and turn the wavelengths into electricity. They do not need bright sunlight to operate so even on cloudy days electricity can be made due to the reflection of sunlight, and on days of light cloud energy yields are higher than in bright sunshine.

How Photovoltaic Cells Work

To make these cells produce energy you need two layers of semi-conductor material which has been adapted, so that one is positively charged and the other negatively charged. When light shines on the semi-conductor, electrons are released to produce electricity. The greater the concentration of light the more electricity is produced. The electrical field across the junctions between the layers causes electricity to flow as (DC) Direct Current. Photovoltaic cells are then joined together to make panels which are positioned strategically to capture as much sunlight as possible on or around the designated building. Once the photovoltaic cells are joined together they officially become Solar Panels.

Where to Install the Solar Panels

Once you decide to have solar panels then positioning them for optimum light and sunlight is a consideration. If you have a good roof space high enough and not shaded by trees, preferably facing south or south west, then you will probably have the ideal location. Because we live a bungalow there is a huge roof facing south on one side. Looking at the design of the roof we concluded we could have several panels facing South East, South and South West thereby capturing sunlight throughout the whole day.

Solar panels can be mounted on frames on a flat roof or the ground or even on the side of buildings. I would think the main criteria are that they are safe and stable so they won’t fall over or blow away in high winds. The solar panel we have installed for hot water is securely mounted on our roof with strong metal fixings.

Solar panels are produced in many shapes and sizes, some are even made as roof tiles, and there is some new technology on the horizon enabling solar panels to be incorporated into actual windows. Smaller portable solar panels can be taken on holiday when you go camping or caravanning.

Today solar panels can be made in many shapes and sizes.

Why Would You Want to Install Your Own Solar Power System?

Green Energy – Well firstly there is the issue of ‘going green’ and avoiding using carbon producing energy. There has never been a better time to do your bit to save the planet. Carbon emissions are contributing to the erosion of the glaciers which provide much of the world with drinking water. Global warming is a huge concern and if a large percentage of the world population reduce their carbon footprint then the hope is that global warming will slow to its natural cycle in the evolution of the earth.

Cost – Then there is the cost of electricity today. Utility companies are charging far too much for energy and today I read in the paper that one company is not going to reduce the bills now that the price or raw materials has gone down. They plan to use the profits for re-investment! So in fact we are paying twice for the cost of re-investment.

Prices in the UK have trebled in the last year and even with less sunlight in the UK than many other countries solar power is still worthwhile to reduce the bills. During this financial crisis anything that can be done to reduce costs is of benefit. Once your solar system is up and running any excess electricity you produce can be sold back to the national grid. So instead of bills you get paid by the electrical companies for producing more than you can use.

Freedom – When I am showering using the water from my solar heating system, I have this wonderful sense of it being free hot water. I know it is not really free because we have already paid for its installation. But now it is done, it looks after itself and on sunny days there is plenty of hot water. It does not need electricity to make the water flow through the pipes so if there is a power cut we can still get hot water.

My approach over the last few years has been to put in systems that free us from the tyranny of the electricity companies and the oil barons. Without independent systems we have no choices if the powerful companies decide to put up prices or cut us off.

The most persuasive argument for me was when Russia decided to cut off gas supplies to the customers when they had a deal in place so that the people of those countries had no fuel to keep them warm during the coldest winter months. From my perspective is seemed it was all because ‘the powers that be’ wanted to flex their power muscles and increase prices to line their own pockets. None of us want to be in that position.

DIY Solar Panels and Installation

Now that we have a solar hot water heating system installed we are keen to get started on producing our own electricity. We use a great deal of electricity running 5 computers for our home based business and expenses have gone through the roof this year.

delighted with the results.

So why would you want to make your own solar panels and then install them yourself? Wind and Solar power systems have been on the market for years but the costs are virtually prohibitive. The cost of commercial panels makes nonsense out of the whole idea of recovering the outlay within a few years. Then there is the satisfaction of producing something vital to maintain our way of life with your own hands.(Rather like growing your own vegetables)

As well as making these panels for yourself and when you have become more skillful at making them, there is the possibility of a lucrative business producing and installing solar systems starting with your friends and neighbours. Once they start telling their friends about the savings they are making you will find you have more orders than you can handle.

Future for our Children and Grandchildren

The ways we have used and misused our natural resources are creating a legacy for our children and grandchildren which will be, to say the least, challenging. The fossil fuels will run out in the next century and as resources become scarce and population increases there will be competition for what is left. I don’t think the world is going to be an easy place to live in and our descendents will have to adapt to a life that could in many ways, be similar to the Middle Ages in Britain or the early settler days in the US.

I won’t dwell on the possibilities of what could be, but I do think anything we can do to help establish a system using renewable energy will be the best legacy we can bestow on future generations.

A wonderful example of natural resources running out is on Easter Island. From study and research of this uninhabited island it would seem there was once plenty of trees. In fact it was completely covered in forest. The inhabitants cut down these trees as a source of fuel but also for carving images which you can still see on the island. However when the trees became scarce, instead of planting and nurturing their valuable resource, they continued to cut down the trees until there were none left. Because there was no more wood they had used up their means of survival so they all died out or possibly left. To this day it is an uninhabited island with no trees. (In New Zealand there is an oral history of the Maori people canoeing from the pacific islands to find their new land of the long white cloud. They could well have been the ones from Easter Island)

Storing Electricity or Selling Back to the Grid.

Just having solar panels is not sufficient to provide you with electricity for your requirements. Once electricity is produced there has to be a system to convey the correct power to the appliances. For the most basic system after the solar panel, you will need a charge controller which regulates the flow of electricity to the battery. A battery is an essential item to maintain the supply when it is dark and an inverter which is essential to convert the direct current (DC) generated by the solar panel to alternating current (AC) for use with all appliances. However by DIY the system could pay for itself within a couple of months.

Once your solar power system is up and running you could opt to just provide electricity for your own use and store any excess in deep cycle batteries. You may however prefer to sell the excess back to the national grid to offset any usage you might need over and above the production of the solar panels installed.

To make a solar panel you can use a solar power kit providing you with detailed instructions of all the items needed to start generating electricity from the sun.

Apparently there are ways of getting deep storage batteries for free in which to store electricity that you have produced, over and above your current consumption. A charge controller is advisable to monitor and control the charging of the battery and prevent it being overcharged. Careful use of the battery will extend its life and save having to change it so often.

Selling electricity back to the national grid will require installation of several more items than the basic system uses and is a little more complicated to install. But if it offsets the cost of the electricity you do need, it might be a better system eventually.

Will it work in the UK?

Although sunlight hours are fewer in the UK than in other more sunny climates photovoltaic cells work with light, and as mentioned earlier, they work particularly well on partially cloudy days of which there are many. We already have several solar units in the garden and I have never known them to not have enough light to work, even in winter.

Will we run out of Raw Materials?

The semi-conductor material used in the construction of the solar cells is mostly silicon. Silicon is basically derived from sand and sand is the second most abundant material in the Earth’s mass. So I think it is unlikely we shall run out of raw materials.

Conclusion

Hot water powered by the sun has been in use for many years in countries where there is a plentiful supply of sun and is known as passive energy. However the development of new technology whereby light can be converted to electricity is a significant step in the evolution of civilisation.

What I don’t understand is why Middle Eastern countries such as Saudi Arabia and Bahrain don’t make more use of this technology Now that oil supplies are dwindling maybe they will turn their attention to other forms of electricity production and use their vast wealth to invest further in the solar and wind technology. I did read that there are plans to turn parts of the Sahara into solar power farms, and that the plan is to export a fair amount of the power produced, into Europe. This could be an excellent export opportunity for Africa.

To be completely free of electricity from the grid would be a huge bonus for me and there seems to be a small revolution going on with a ground swell of public opinion demanding the use of renewable sources to produce energy. People are getting fed up with being hostage to energy companies and are looking for ways to challenge the system.

It is a fact that solar power is one of the safest, easiest and cheapest ways to create electricity for our homes. In an ever increasingly energy hungry planet, currently only 0.2% of energy comes from renewable sources and 93% comes from sources that will eventually run out. So now is the time to look for an alternative in the form of wind and solar energy to provide a very moral and ethical gift for the generations to come

How Many Things Can Go Wrong

June 28th, 2009 by admin

What a time I’ve had lately it all started out with a problem with my tap leaking well anyway I tried to find a localised plumber in the localised telephone directory – who could turn up within a week no luck there Anyway I made up one’s mind to do a search on google for Plumbers Newcastle. Struck gold with that one there they where online .Anyways I used the contact form and within about 15 minutes I received a phone call to fix up an appointment .That’s what I call service. To cut a long story short they came out the very day and where quite a bit cheaper than the firm who could not get to me for about a week.

Not long after the initial problem was settled don’t I get a telephone call from a friend saying someone has rammed into his car from behind and are denying any obligation. Not truly sure how that goes as they clearly drove into his car. Well hot on my success with google and the phantom plumbers don’t I get on-line and go searching for a Newcastle Solicitor for him. Merely on the off chance that his policy has some tiny little clause about legal costs who knows?

On a happier note someone I know has determined to spend some of their redundancy on purchasing a window cleaning business. Not quite sure if they have done as much research as they should before going for it .I have told them that they require a Newcastle Accountant to look at the books of account as these individuals recognize exactly what they are looking at. For the cost it may well spare him thousands if the concern is going to close or with a bit of luck the accountant will turn around and say that it seems like a profitable business go for it.

So all in all the last few weeks have been quite eventful around here. Looking ahead to a few smooth weeks now with no more leaks or phone calls about car accidents.

Methods For Relieving Back Pain

June 28th, 2009 by admin

Once you know about common causes of back pain you may have a better understanding of how to prevent and treat it in the first place.

Losing a few pounds may appear to be a difficult option but of it can be well worth the effort to lose weight when you get some relief for that pain.  Minding your posture, training yourself to lift with your legs – these small changes can add up to big relief for your back.

But you may need to do more than all of this.  You take all the precautions possible and still you have back pain – after all, you can’t very well live your life in a recliner or refuse to pick up your children just to keep yourself safe from potential injury!  So when you have soreness and pain, what can you do?

RELIEVING THE PRESSURE

The muscles of the back are usually able to heal and repair themselves from minor injury, and sometimes the pain you feel is simply those muscles cramping up to protect themselves so that they can heal. Relieving the pressure on your back can help your body to heal on its own.

Of course, as we’ve already mentioned there is virtually no movement a human can make that doesn’t involve the back. Even while you are sitting, the back muscles are working to keep your upper body straight and supported.

Keeping this in mind, you realize how important it is to be in a reclined position that tilts your body back and relieves that pressure on your midsection.  When your feet are higher than your pelvic area then you have less pressure on your back and it can heal.  Many have found that stretching out on the floor with pillows under the knees can help tremendously, however, do not put the pillows under your feet.  This puts added pressure on the area of the hips and this causes the back muscles to tense up even more.

If you’re laying flat on your stomach your back is still working as the front of your body collapses and your back keeps you straight.  You can instead use cushions or pillows under your stomach and upper body area to support yourself so that the back is not working as hard.

HEAT

Why is it that heat can help to relieve body pain?  Simply put, heat draws blood to that area of the body where heat is applied and blood delivers important nutrients and healing elements.  When you apply heat to your muscles they relax because the increased blood flow forces them to “unclench” themselves, and especially in areas of the back can this be important.

When your back is in pain you don’t want to go overboard with the heat and of course there are injuries and other ailments that won’t be responsive to heat – for example if you have a herniated disk that’s not going to be healed with a heating pad! – but often muscles that have been overworked and strained can relax with a simple application of heat. If you’re at work all day see if it is somehow possible to arrange a heating pad behind you for the duration of the day. If you notice that your back is starting to tense up then lean back and stay that way for a few minutes so that the heat has a chance to work.

Even though they are not boiling, care needs to be taken when using heating pads on bare skin. It’s not safe to sleep on top of one or to have it turned up too high.  Keep a piece of cloth between your skin and the heating pad – if it doesn’t have its own cover be sure to use a thin towel, sheet, or shirt.

Moist heat can also help the body to relax as the moisture loosens the muscles and skin as well.  You can get a thin towel or washcloth wet and put it between the heating pad and your back.

Having a hot shower or bath can be a big help in relieving that pressure.  A shower massage especially can work those muscles like a massage and force them to loosen up and soothe back pain.

STRETCHING

When those back muscles want to clamp up sometimes you need to force them to relax so as to cut down on the pain.  Stretching your back and your sides is a great way to reduce your pain.

However this calls for extreme caution. It’s possible to do more damage by overextending yourself.  It’s also important to make sure that you’re stretching properly so that you don’t put added stress on your back. Without the proper support many bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts actually do a lot of damage to their back when stretching and working out.

Usually it’s best to sit on the floor and put your hands behind you and just stretch your back slightly.  This will give it support as you pull those muscles loose.  Moving forward carefully and slowly until your body is extended out in front of you can also loosen those muscles.

Flexion and extension

In terms of stretching, flexion means bending forward and extension means moving backwards. The release of pressure on the vertebrae when you stretch forward helps to alleviate pain caused by grinding between them.  Sometimes just standing with your feet shoulder-width apart and bending straight forward to touch your toes can help to alleviate back pressure and pain.  You need to watch your posture even as you do this so that you’re not curling yourself up and putting more pressure on your spine, but a simple stretch like this can help to loosen those tight and sore muscles.

Be careful when bending backwards that you watch your posture and make sure you don’t overextend.  Some have a tendency to think of a particular area they want to touch or span they want to reach, but you need to be mindful of your body’s own flexibility.

EXERCISE

Does anyone really like to exercise? Sure, there are obviously some who do but not everyone is like this.  Most people see exercise as a chore to be dreaded and would rather spend their free time stretched out in a favorite chair in front of the television or movie screen.

There are innumerable benefits to regular physical activity for humans, no matter what your physical situation.  Exercise increases blood circulation and the blood is what brings nutrition and oxygen to every cell in the body.  The digestive system, skin, bones, and major organs all benefit in this way from increased blood circulation. Exercise makes the heart and lungs work harder which in turn makes them stronger and a person is less likely to suffer from asthma, shortness of breath, heart disease, and conditions such as this.  Regular exercise also helps to keep one’s weight under control and there are many benefits to being at a healthy weight.

But exercise can help repair back problems and prevent a person from having painful back problems. How is this possible?

The first connection has to do with one’s weight; as we’ve mentioned excess body weight means more stress and strain on the back as it needs to work harder to move that weight around and to keep the body steady and upright.  Many who are overweight also find that their posture suffers quite a bit as this excessive weight pulls them forward, and this too keeps the back muscles tense and painful.

There is more to the association between exercise and back problems than just weight.  That increased blood circulation means that your back muscles are also getting those important nutrients and healing agents that are delivered by the blood. Oxygen is one of the most important ingredients the body needs and uses when healing a wound or injury, and oxygen is delivered by the blood.  When your back muscles are overused, injured or tense, that oxygen is desperately important for it to heal itself.

Exercising also keeps those back muscles loose and relaxed.  When you walk or cycle or do anything else along those lines, the back muscles are worked and forced to loosen up.  This means that they’re relaxed and less likely to be pulled or cramped when in use.

Just as happens with other body muscles, they become stronger when exercised.  When the back muscles are stronger they’re more resistant to pulls, tears, and overuse.  Regular exercise is good for the back muscles in this way and can help to alleviate pain from these types of injuries.

When a person exercises regularly their bones get stronger. This may be because the blood circulation also helps the bones to strengthen themselves, and if the bones in the back are strengthened then the back has better support.

Ears Ringing

June 28th, 2009 by admin

Do you suffer with ears ringing on a constant basis and do not know why or what can be done about it? The severity of ringing ears can vary from softly irritating occasional ringing to severely deafening consistent ringing and anything in between. If you are bothered by ringing in the ears, you might be suffering from tinnitus. This is a true medical problem and there are options for you to seek help.

Many people feel like they are alone when they suffer from ears ringing when the particular truth of the situation is that millions of Americans suffer with these symptoms. In addition to ringing, other sounds in the ears that may be related to tinnitus include:

    • Buzzing
    • Humming
    • Roaring
    • Clanging
    • Beating
    • Banging
    • Blowing
    • Popping
    • Whistling

This is not an all-inclusive list as people who have ringing in the ears also describe other kinds of sounds as well. Constant ringing in the ears can be a real problem. It can affect your ability to sleep at night as well as your ability to perform your job and even how you interact with others. If you or somebody you love is suffering from ears ringing, it’s time to do something. Regardless of how long you have had this problem, you can about it, starting today.

The first thing that you should know if you have problems with ears ringing is that it isn’t not in your head. You aren’t imagining this and it’s an extraordinarily real problem. Millions of people suffer with the same issue and many of them are now finding relief. Once you make yourself aware that your problem is real, you can begin to handle it in a logical way. You might have thought your ears ringing problem was just something you would need to suffer thru and live with forever but this is simply not the case. The next step is to attempt to identify the root of your ear ringing. This is vital as the cause can help you identify a cure. For example, were you know that some ear ringing is caused by certain medications? If this is your case, your problem may lie in stopping or changing your medicine. Other times the ringing in the ears is the results of stress or other medical conditions that may be treated. Sometimes the ringing might have been caused by an injury to the head or ears and even in these cases, there are steps you can take to treat your condition.

Once you try and pin down the cause or source of your ear ringing, you can begin to think about your treatment options. Make sure you take some time to research all of your options before selecting the one you suspect is your bag. Knowledge grants power and the more you can study this condition and your possible treatments, the better able you’ll be to discover a treatment for yourself.

The advice provided is for researching purposes only. No medical treatment is implied. As with any condition it is best to talk with a health professional before taking any medical advice.

Fascinating Prague

June 26th, 2009 by admin

The capital of the Czech Republic is one of the most important historical preservation sites in central Europe. Prague’s unique urban centre has been a UNESCO world cultural and natural heritage site since 1992.

Prague is a great city for romantics. Remnants of the city’s history are found on nearly every corner.

A saunter through the Old City past Powder Tower (1475), the old town hall and other equally beautiful baroque architectural masterpieces leads to the Charles Bridge, one of the most photographed in the world.

Prague Castle was erected on the Hradshin River by a property developer called Premysl sometime around 870, and Prague soon became the epicentre of the House of Premysl.

Vratislav I, the first Bohemian monarch, transfered the royal residence to Vysehrad Castle in 1085, probably due to a power struggle with his brother, Bishop Jaromir.

Prague Castle remained the seat of the bishops of Prague for decades. The Cathedral of St. Vitus, another early building, is also located on the castle grounds.

Prague grows up.

Protected by the two castles, a sea of German and Jewish businessmen and local craftsmen led to fast expansion on both sides of the Muldau River. The largest fortified section was near the already ancient Prague Castle. Prague received its city charter in 1234 from King Wenceslas I, who made it his primary residence.

Shortly thereafter, the “New Town” districts of Mala Strana and Hradshin were ffounded. The fourteenth century brought yet more prosperity to Prague. In 1348 the first university in central Europe was founded here, Charles University, named after Emperor Charles IV.

In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Prague was torn apart by two religious wars. The Hussite Wars (1419-1437) and the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) left deep scars.

The events that set off both of these conflicts took place in Prague. These include the famous “defenestrations”, in which Catholic clerics and dignitaries were thrown out of windows by dissenters, the first time by Hussites, followers of rebel reformer Jan Hus, and later by Protestants, setting off the Thirty Years War.

The victims of the first defenestration did not fall far, but landed in the arms of a mob waiting outside to lynch them. The second time was from an upper story, but the Catholics were saved because they fell into a heap of garbage. From the Catholic point of view, divine intervention prevailed. The two long, debilitating conflicts killed hundreds of thousands, setting back growth for generations. Like other afflicted cities, Prague lost most of its international prominence during this time.

Prague in Spring-Time.

In 1945, Prague became the capital of the Soviet Socialist Republic of Czechoslovakia. Communist leadership caused a deep-seated financial crisis: the Soviet central planning bureau contributed to nearly complete economic disaster.

In the spring of 1968, public criticism grew and much of the population became increasingly radicalized. Street demonstrations of the “Prague Spring” were news all over the earth.

Ultimately, power struggles within the ruling party led to the invasion of Prague by Warsaw Pact troops on 21 August 1968, and the brief period of expression was ruthlessly put down.

It would be 1989 before Prague separated itself from Russian control, and in 1993 was named capital of an independent Czech Republic.

Small Garden Grown Your Own vegetables By The Square Foot

June 25th, 2009 by admin

Traditional vegetables consist of long, single rows of vegetables spaced widely apart. By using raised beds and the principles of square foot gardening it is possible to increase the yield by 400% for the same area. To ensure you understand your garden and learn about plants you should keep a square foot garden diary to have a log of your failures and successes to improve your results.

The practice of square foot gardening is not just for those with small gardens; rather square foot gardens allows you to concentrate your work effort to create an ideal plant environment, to give better yields naturally.

The are many people who like the idea of digging for victory. They enjoy the sight of long, straight rows in their gardens and the hard labor that goes with digging and hoeing the land, whilst others like machine cultivation.

Owning a square foot garden still means weeding by hand but because the raised bed is filled with vermiculite, peat and compost there are fewer weeds and they can easily be seen and removed in a few minutes.

If you like the idea of all your vegetables being ready to harvest in one go then square foot gardens are not for you. The idea of square foot gardens is to have something growing all the time so you can have fresh vegetables growing in your garden for most of the year.

To benefit you need to have a good square foot garden plan which requires to be thought out early in the year, thorough planning to make the best use of your time and space. Before you start planting, you must consider the interrelationships of plants with each other and their needs and how to protect them from bugs and insects.

Square foot gardens are based on 4ft by 4ft raised beds. If you have more space then the length of the bed can be increased to 3.6m. The width should not be more that 1.2m so that you can easily reach the middle with out standing on the soil.
